About Thorough Financial Services
TFS is a boutique CPA firm in Gaithersburg, Maryland, built around one conviction: the most caring thing a professional can give you is structure — clear scope, a defined cadence, and judgment that answers for its work.
Portrait of Joel Lee, CPA/EA
Owner & CPA
Every engagement at TFS is owned by Joel Lee — Certified Public Accountant and Enrolled Agent. The pairing is deliberate: the CPA license carries planning judgment and advisory rigor; the EA credential carries the authority to represent taxpayers before the IRS at every level. Automation routes work and sends reminders at TFS. It never decides, never files, and never signs. Joel does.

Why structure
Anyone can quote a lower number in April. What a lower number never includes: quarterly estimates that arrive before the deadline, a November planning session before the year closes, books reviewed monthly by a CPA, and a scope that’s written down so nothing important is silently out of bounds. TFS is priced as a relationship because the work is a relationship — a defined cadence, delivered on time, right-sized honestly at every renewal.
Scope discipline is a client protection. When everything is “included,” nothing is guaranteed. When scope is explicit, you know exactly what you’re owed — and we know exactly what to deliver.
How the firm runs
“Structured” is an operating fact, not a slogan. Here is what it looks like in practice.
Foundation, Growth, or Executive — recommended after a fit conversation, never self-selected blind.
Deliverables run on a written rhythm — monthly, quarterly, annual — not on whoever emails loudest.
Work beyond scope is a named line item, agreed in advance. Nothing is silently absorbed or padded.
Every year the package is right-sized against actual scope — up or down.
The stack, and its limits
TFS runs on professional-grade, off-the-shelf systems — each with a clear owner. Automation at TFS routes work, tracks deadlines, and sends reminders.

The ledger of record
It never exercises judgment, never files, never approves, and never expands scope. Those calls belong to a CPA — on purpose, permanently.
Get started
A short conversation — no documents, no obligation. We’ll tell you honestly whether TFS is the right partner, and which package matches.
A fit conversation is not a tax-planning engagement, proposal, or client relationship. No CPA-client relationship is created until an engagement letter is signed.
